We’re pleased to announce that we are now an accredited Better Food Trader, a great endorsement to our efforts in promoting a more sustainable food system.

Better Food Traders is a network of ethical enterprises committed to climate-friendly growing and eating. Established in January 2020, it is supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and works in partnership with Sustain. The network is currently made up of 10 food traders, all doing their bit to help people buy food that is good for our communities and our planet – and we couldn’t be prouder to be one of the pioneering members.

We achieved our accreditation after our sourcing and trading practices were thoroughly checked. This is what the accrediting panel said:

“We want to commend Veg Box for completing their application during the increased workload of Covid-19. We’re really impressed with Veg Box’s strong commitment to buying from small farms and how they create strong links within their local community.”

Why we need to rethink our food system

Better Food Traders is a movement that reminds us why our current food system needs changing:

  • 95% of the food grocery market is owned by supermarkets, creating an unfair balance between food producers and consumers
  • At least 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to food
  • Extensive farming practices are destroying our soil through erosion and degradation
  • 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction by the land-use change brought about by the food industry

We think the time has come to start questioning what we eat and where it comes from. We are proud to now align ourselves with other Better Food Traders and join the collective effort to achieve a food system that is local, seasonal, healthy, fairly traded, low carbon and kind to people.

What does this mean for you?

First of all, you now have extra confidence in us and in our sourcing and trading processes because we are checked and accredited by a third-party, unbiased group.

Secondly, please help us spread the word about Better Food Traders and check out the other great small and ethical enterprises that are part of this movement.
